Religious Outlook & the Work of ICM

The constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the government generally respects this right in practice. It also does not restrict academic freedom, although threats and harassment have caused many professors and students to adopt lower profiles and avoid discussing controversial topics.

In spite of harsh realities of life in Colombia, the Lord is greatly favoring this South American country. In 1981, less than 1% called themselves evangelicals, with 96% of the population claiming to be Roman Catholic.

Today, an estimated 10-20% of Colombians (3.5–7 million) are evangelical Christians. Local churches are seeing hundreds of conversions each week. As one of our church building partners recently said, truly “where sin abounded, grace abounded much more” (Rom. 5:20).

ICM’s partnership with Colombian evangelical leaders began in 2006. Together with these indigenous organizations, ICM is assisting in the spiritual transformation of Colombia and plans to build dozens of churches in the next few years.
