Bangladesh is one of the most difficult places to live in the world. Nearly half of the population lives in poverty, with the average person having to survive on less than $1.50 per day or $540 per year. Recent estimates of Bangladesh's population range from 142 to 159 million, making it the 7th most populous nation in the world. A striking comparison is offered by the fact that Russia's population is slightly smaller even though Russia has a land area at least 120 times bigger than Bangladesh. While academic freedom is generally respected, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and political freedoms are greatly limited. Child labor is widespread and the danger of catching a major infectious disease is high.
Our God—Whose eye is on even the insignificant sparrow—can care and provide for each person He has created. Sadly, less than 1% of Bangladeshis know this wonderful truth; the remaining 155 million people live in spiritual darkness. Now is the time to invest in the ministries of our Bangladeshi brothers and sisters. After all, as Christ’s body on earth, it is our privilege and responsibility to care for each other and “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit!” (Matt. 28:19)
