History

International Cooperating Ministries Church Building Work: 1986 – 2010

All Data Current as of August 2, 2010

The church building work of International Cooperating Ministries (ICM) began in India in 1986 when ICM founder Dois Rosser provided funding to build a church there to honor his father. Today, there are more than 1,100 ICM partner churches in India, alone. In fact, as of July 2010, ICM has helped build 3,621 projects in 56 countries. These projects include not only traditional church buildings, but also church-orphanages, chapels, love homes, learning centers, training centers, and schools. And, as a result of ICM’s “daughter church” strategy, the ministry has seen more than 20,000 additional church congregations established.

Shortly after the initial work in India began, Rosser established a charitable foundation using a substantial portion of his personal wealth to fund the ministry. ICM’s outreach model contradicts many traditional approaches, in that there are no paid overseas staff members. The ministry continues to have a global impact while employing fewer than 25 full-time, local staff. The foundation funds all overhead, allowing all gifts to ICM’s work to go directly to church building and Mini Bible College projects.

According to Pat MacMillan, a consultant with Triaxia Partners in Atlanta, Georgia, the ministry’s founding principles were 20 years ahead of their time. “I knew faith-based ministries, but here was one started by a businessman, and it was violating all the rules of the typical ministry. It talked about results and accountability and leverage. I just loved the sound of it.”

MacMillan contrasted the approach used by many other ministries , which involved high costs in time and financial resources—training and sending American missionaries to the field—with the way ICM started. By teaming up with indigenous ministry leaders around the world, MacMillan said, “… you have ministry impact right out of the blocks, for considerably less money, and it’s considerably more effective.”

This approach (working with indigenous people and leaders; creating strategic networks and partnerships; and leveraging technology) is now being adopted by other ministries. ICM has been at the forefront of what is now an emerging trend in missions work. “[If] you took a look at ICM, it started by doing all of those things, whereas many of the older, more [traditional] … missions [agencies] are having to retrofit themselves as they confront emerging trends … around the world,” MacMillan said.

ICM’s strategy consists of working together with indigenous partners to build “mother churches” in each country. The mother church strategy involves building new churches approximately 25 miles from one another. Each of these “mother” churches, in turn, commits to planting at least five “daughter” congregations nearby. ICM’s goal is to “blanket” each nation with churches and other projects. Using this multiplication strategy, ICM and its partners have seen more than 20,000 congregations, to date, established worldwide. The churches are the catalysts that facilitate the ministry’s primary purpose: nurturing believers.

ICM nurtures believers primarily through the teaching of the Mini Bible College (MBC), a clear, systematic Bible curriculum developed by Pastor Dick Woodward. MBC consists of more than 400 individual lessons in audio, print and other formats. The teachings include an entire survey of the Old and New Testaments; the Sermon on the Mount; the Gospel of John; studies covering First Corinthians, Romans, the Values of Christ, Family and Marriage; and more than 20 teachings on various aspects of Godly living.

Woodward served as senior pastor of the Virginia Beach Community Chapel, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for more than 20 years. Rosser became acquainted with Woodward in the late 70s. In 1982, when Woodward was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease of the spinal cord, he began creating MBC.

MBC was first aired in English locally in Virginia Beach, and then via Trans-World Radio (Bonaire) in 1986. Later, it was translated into Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin.  In 1991, the Telugu translation for India was released. Today, MBC has been translated into 26 languages and is currently broadcast via radio in 16 of these languages. It’s delivered via the Internet and through digital audio players and CDs. Booklets, leadership materials and study guides are also available.  Internationally, ICM churches use the materials for evangelism, pastoral teaching and nurturing believers in Bible study groups.

Expansion of the Church Building Work:

In 1988, just two years after beginning work in India, God opened a door for ICM to build churches in China. Then, in 1994 the ministry started construction on churches in the country of Vietnam.

In the mid-to late-1990s, ICM’s outreach began to accelerate rapidly. Ministry staff saw greatly expanded opportunities for projects in 12 additional countries. These countries were located in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and the Caribbean.

In 1995 ICM began work in Russia, Ukraine and Zimbabwe, with the Democratic Republic of Congo following in 1996. Cuba, Tanzania, and Uganda saw ground breaking for projects begin in 1997, and Ghana followed in 1998. Four countries came online the next year (1999), including Cambodia, Haiti, Nepal and the United States.

Over the course of the next decade, ICM added new countries worldwide on a rolling basis. By 2010 the ministry had expanded the work by another 42 nations.

The 22 projects for the first half of this period include: Brazil, Kenya and Nigeria (2000); Liberia (2001); Argentina, Malawi, South Africa and Thailand (2002); Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Pakistan and Zambia (2003); Belarus, Congo, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iraq (2004); and Bangladesh, Colombia and Peru (2005).

Nineteen countries joined the ICM roster in the years 2006-2010, including: Kyrgyzstan, Mexico and the Philippines, (2006); Burundi, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Rwanda, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan (2007); Ecuador, Egypt and Tajikistan (2008); Costa Rica, Mali and Moldova (2009); and Central African Republic, Honduras and Turkey (2010).  All told, ICM ministry partner projects now exist in nearly 29 percent of the world’s 195 countries.

According to Janice Rosser Allen, ICM Executive Chair and Rosser’s daughter, the demand for teaching materials and church buildings continues to increase as the global outreach expands. ICM growth plan is evaluated annually. Each year ICM establishes projections by region and/or continent. The 2010 goal includes the approval of 525 new building projects, with 158 for all of Africa; 127 for all of Latin America; and 240 for Asia, which includes India, China, Vietnam, and other partner countries in the region. The approval stage is defined as a project that has successfully completed an application and is awaiting the first payment.

The approval process for ICM to partner in a church building project requires that the partner organization have at least 100 congregants who are already meeting regularly, as well as a full-time or dedicated pastor. The congregation must also own the land where the new church will be built and provide proof of ownership by submitting a copy of the title deed. In addition, to be approved, the congregation must agree to plant a minimum of five daughter congregations within three years of their church’s completion, provide periodic progress reports with supporting photos, and use a portion of their tithes to help fund additional church construction.

ICM’s major 2010 initiative for Vietnam is to build 100 more projects, including larger churches, which range in cost between $15,000 and $40,000; chapels, which cost $5,000 each, and “Love Homes” for church planters at $1,500 each. The target completion date is December 2011. This initiative is being undertaken in honor of the 100th anniversary of Protestantism in Vietnam.

The major initiative for China, which began last year, is the approval of 200 church building projects by the end of 2011. To date, ICM has 292 churches in China either built or under construction. The churches are built for congregations of 100 – 400 members. Funding needs are approximately $30,000 per church.

In Colombia, ICM is on the cusp of expanding its work there in a substantial way. To date, the ministry is now partnering with the leaders of seven major ministries strategically working throughout the country. Collectively, ICM has the capacity to supervise the construction of more than 34 church projects in that country simultaneously.

Finally, in 2010 ICM is partnering with a large ministry in India that is working throughout the entire nation. The focus is creating Cluster Complexes. Each cluster will impact 125 villages and consist of churches, learning centers, orphanages and training centers.  ICM has three of these complexes currently under construction and plans to begin two more over the next six months.

To construct each complex, ICM must raise $320,000. Additional funds are contributed by the in-country indigenous partner organization.

Summary - International Cooperating Ministries

Statement of Faith

ICM subscribes to the Lausanne Covenant, a declaration of faith agreed upon by more than 2,300 evangelical Christians during the 1974 International Congress in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Lausanne Covenant details our belief in being intentional about evangelization and the call to work together to make Jesus Christ known throughout the world.

We believe in one eternal God, Creator and Lord of the world, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who governs all things according to the purpose of His will.

We believe in Jesus Christ, God's Son, who is Savior and Lord, and who gave Himself as a ransom for sinners through His death on the cross. He rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, where, as truly God and truly man, Jesus is the only mediator between God and humankind.

We believe that all people are lost sinners and cannot see the Kingdom of God except through new birth. Justification is by grace through faith in Christ alone.

We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, the very Spirit of God, sent to bear witness of the Son. We believe in the work of God's Spirit for the individual's new birth and growth, and for the Church's constant renewal in truth, wisdom, faith, holiness, love, power, and mission.

We believe the Old and New Testament Scriptures to be the only inspired, written Word of God, infallible and without error, our guide for faith and practice.

We believe in one holy, universal, and apostolic Church. The Church's calling is to worship and witness for Jesus Christ, who is the Head, preaching the Gospel among all nations and demonstrating its commitment by compassionate service to the needs of all people.

We believe that Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in power and glory to consummate His salvation and His judgment. God will fully manifest His Kingdom when He establishes a new heaven and a new earth in which He is glorified forever and ever.

Our founder served the Lausanne event as a board member of the conference for world evangelism.  Therefore, we ascribe to the tenants of this covenant.

Meet Our Team

Leadership, Ministry Team & Board of Directors

Dois Rosser

Dois Rosser, Founder and Chair Emeritus

Dois I. Rosser, Jr. is a man of passion, vision and action.  His longtime career as a businessman in Hampton Roads, Virginia, birthed multiple automobile dealerships, land development projects and numerous business ventures.  As he will quickly say, “all of my life in the business world was preparation for what God has for me now.”  During a trip to India in 1986, Dois saw the immense need of providing places of worship for congregations where they could be nurtured in their faith.  He then founded International Cooperating Ministries (ICM), and to date over 3,000 churches in 49 countries have been built by God’s grace.  He currently serves as Chair Emeritus of ICM.  He previously served on the Board for Trans World Radio, the Lausanne Conference for World Evangelism, Leighton Ford Ministries, Youth Focus, Overseas Council for Theological & Missions, Inc., and Prison Fellowship Ministries.  Dois lives in Hampton, Virginia, and has been married to the former Shirley Sutton since 1943.  They have three daughters, two sons-in-law, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. You can read more about Dois and ICM in the book The God Who Hung on the Cross.

Janice Allen

Janice Rosser Allen, Executive Chair

Janice has been an ICM board member since the ministry’s inception twenty-five years ago. In 2002, she became involved with strategic planning, operations and development and has been ICM Executive Chair since 2008. Janice is passionate about sharing the amazing stories of how God is working around the world to transform lives and change nations for Jesus Christ and his Church.

Janice graduated with honors from the University of Virginia and earned a Master’s Degree from Duke University in 1977. She was founder and director of Alachua General Hospice in Florida, Clinical Professor at Boston University and Clearinghouse Coordinator for Love, INC (In the Name of Christ) in Charlottesville, Virginia.

As a volunteer, Janice served as an Elder at Third Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va. and Chair of the Adult Committee for Young Life, Richmond. She has three grown sons, Grant, Matt and Connor and one daughter-in-law, Adrienne. Follow her on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ICM_janice.

Geoff Stiff

Geoffrey Stiff, President

Geof is former senior vice president for the Retirement and Protection segment of Genworth Financial in Richmond, Va., and has more than 35 years of experience in finance, management and product development. A former CPA, CFO and insurance executive, he is also an innovator of financial products and has numerous patents pending. He has served ICM as a board member since 2006 and as chair for the Finance Committee since 2007. He serves as an Elder at Third Presbyterian Church in Richmond.

“My discipleship path, my heart for missions, and my love for Mini Bible College give me a passion for what God is doing through ICM,” says Geof.

Jan Stringer

Jan Stringer, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Jan, a seasoned veteran of ICM (13 years!), feels her work at ICM is fulfilling a call God laid on her heart more than 20 years ago. Her degrees in Business Management and Business Administration enable her to keep the office running smoothly. And we are all grateful for that! If we hear a traditional hymn playing from the conference room on Thursday morning we know Jan is leading our staff devotions, as she enjoys incorporating music into her time of sharing. When not in the office you may find Jan on the tennis court, golf course, reading, volunteering or visiting the elderly. She doesn’t like to brag, but her tennis team advanced to districts this year. Way to go Jan!

Don Douglas

Don Douglas, Senior Vice President of Ministry Programs

If you need a quick ditty, Don Douglas is your guy.  His creative poems and little jingles make us groan and laugh, but they’re a fun way to spice up meetings and devotions with lessons he’s learned in the “school of life.”  We can always count on Don for a great joke or pun, too.  It’s as if he needs a permanent drummer by his side to hit the “dah dah, chah” just after his punch lines.   After 28 years in the banking world, we’re thankful God wouldn’t let Don pass up the opportunity to serve as ICM’s Vice President of Ministry Programs.  On an “average” day, Don joyfully tackles the responsibilities of communicating with indigenous partners, problem-solving church construction challenges, and overseeing the Mini Bible College.  You might not believe it, but Don’s roots are in Mt. Airy, North Carolina – home of the world’s largest open-faced granite quarry and the inspiration for Andy Griffith’s community of Mayberry.

Albert Allen, Director of Partnership Review, Latin America

Angela

Angela Seward-Trabbold, MBC Coordinator

Communication is the key! We’re so glad that Angela communicates so well with our Indigenous Partners. Whether via email or phone, she ensures everything is going well with the progress of all the church projects. That’s right, all of the churches under construction. Angela’s talents are not limited to monitoring our church projects; she’s also a published writer! Angela has written two children’s books, Goodnight Daddy and Maxx and the Wishing Bone. We are so proud!

Angie

Angela VanDoren, International Church Growth Support Associate

Born in Colombia, Angie is a wealth of knowledge for our Caribbean, Central and South American partners.  She speaks Spanish so quickly that we are not only fascinated, but also embarrassed that we only remember phrases like “How many pesos?” from college courses.  Her fluency truly covers a multitude of our misconjugated verbs.  Angie’s previous experience with vacation home deeds, finances and construction have translated perfectly into her role at ICM and she’s still amazed that God has allowed her to “no longer build houses for vacations; but to build Temples to pray to the Lord.”  She and her husband have one college-aged daughter (go UVA!) and love traveling to Colombia to visit family.  As if this bio isn’t interesting enough, Angie’s taken on the challenge of writing an autobiography.  We’ve offered to illustrate, but our drawings may only be as good as our Spanish.

Bill

Bill Daley, Finance/Administrative Assistant

Bill Daley snuck in the back door to work at ICM in the summer of 2010. He came in as a volunteer from a United Way website referral. Now he works part time as a Finance/Administrative Assistant in the Finance Department and as a Technical Aide in the Mini Bible College Department.

Bill has been married for 20 years to his wife Susanne, who grew up in Newport News. Together, they are raising their only child Elizabeth (12 years old) and looking after Susanne’s mother, who lives in a local nursing home. The family enjoys watching Disney and Nickelodeon TV shows, playing at Water Country and Busch Gardens, bouncing on the family trampoline and working on outdoor landscaping projects.

Bill feels that the people at ICM have made him a better Christian by the tasks and duties they execute. He is grateful for their acts and kind words.

Brad

Brad Orchard, Director of Partnership Review and Field Audit - Africa

Summoned by God out of a twenty year California career in radio and television to “go into the world, preach the gospel and make disciples,” Brad, with the loving support of his wife, answered the call to embark on a worldwide evangelistic odyssey. Brad began work with a church planting ministry where he gained extensive travel experience to over 30 countries, leading crusades and outreach programs to start over 100 churches. Then, while flying to Moscow one summer, he read about ICM in The Good Life by Chuck Colson. Two months later, Brad found himself in Hampton, Virginia and a friend mentioned ICM’s founder, Dois Rosser, and suggested Brad meet him. Brad called Mr. Rosser and soon thereafter he joined the ICM team. Since spring 2007, he has been working and traveling with our African partners and is thrilled and humbled that God called him to be a part of our team.

Daniel Schuring

Daniel Schuring, IT Manager and Systems Engineer

Daniel Schuring is a modern-day Mowgli from The Jungle Book.  No, he wasn’t exactly raised by a singing bear and didn’t learn to swing on vines – but he did grow up in the rain forest of Amapá, Brazil with his missionary family, ministering to the remote Waiãpi tribe.  Close enough.  Today, Daniel patiently (emphasize patiently) tends to our IT systems, resisting the urge to smile when we describe problems with verbiage like “it just doesn’t work,” and “I can’t remember what the error message said.”  We owe him plenty of thanks for fixing things without making us feel computer-challenged.  When he can escape the world of mice and ICM, he likes discovering new bands and musicians, studying for his remaining IT and Studio Fine Arts classes, and competing in beach volleyball.  Did you know?  Volleyball is huge in Brazil.

Gary Combs

Derick DeHaan, Great Lakes Area Director

When it comes to feeling comfortable within a crowd, Derick DeHaan is well-suited to embrace that description. Derick is “tied for youngest” among eight children from a large immigrant family, and his team sports experience in high school, college, and beyond shaped him to be a “team player” inside and outside of the realm of athletics. He recently joined the ICM Ministry Advancement team with the mission of expanding ICM’s name and philanthropic support from previously untapped regions in the United States. Derick was blessed to travel nationally for two Christian organizations based in Michigan before moving recently to Virginia, and he is excited to tackle ambitious goals within the major gift and planned gift arenas. Optimism and laughter seem to be part of Derick’s DNA and he is a positive influence among his co-workers, his two grandsons, and his local community church. He and his talented wife, Victoria, are very pleased to be among the ICM family and friends.

Diana Harper

Diana Harper, Executive Assistant/Guest Relations

With one of the known world’s most hospitable personalities, Diana Harper has welcomed people to ICM from around the globe.  Odds are, if you’ve ever called the home office, her soothing “have a seat, can I get you a glass of homemade lemonade?” voice probably answered on the other end.  Connecting calls and keeping track of the ICM staff isn’t all lady Di does – she also loves to sweet-talk her Chihuahua, Coco, play with her new grandson, and tackle all sorts of extreme home projects.  Safety goggles are on their way.

Dick Woodward, Author of Mini Bible College

Dick Woodward helped found and pastor both the Virginia Beach Community Chapel, where he served 23 years, and the Williamsburg Community Chapel, where he remains as pastor emeritus. His relationship with Dois Rosser has made it possible for Dick to realize his dream of “The Whole Word for the Whole World”. His Mini Bible College has been translated into more than 26 strategic languages and used around the world to nurture believers and assist church growth. MBC is a survey, book, and topical study of the Bible that teaches practical and devotional applications of every book of the Bible to our lives.

In 1980 Dick was diagnosed with a degenerative disease of the spinal cord that has left him a quadriplegic. In spite of this disease he remains active in small groups, mentoring, and writing Bible study materials. He often says, “The less I can do, the more the Lord does.”

Learn more about Dick. Click here.

Gary Combs

Gary Combs, Director of Mini Bible College

When you want a warm smile and a sense of calm, talk to Gary. Recognizing how much God has accomplished through the collective efforts of ICM, its partners, donors, and volunteers, Gary has joined us from former pastoral roles in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For over 15 years, he has been led by God into men’s ministries and into a church-sponsored lay pastorate program. Prior to ministry, he worked as a marketing executive and had his own business. He feels blessed to be immersed in the awesome mission of bringing the Whole Word to the whole world. When he is not at ICM, Gary can be found outdoors – at the beach, in the woods (on ATV’s with his grandson), on the boat, or in his park-like yard.”

Heather Daye

Heather Daye, International Church Growth Support Associate

Behind Heather’s bespectacled eyes is a brain that sees the comedy in almost any situation.  Unless, of course, it has to do with taxes and the IRS, and we absolutely love that about her.  OCD by nature, the whiteboard in Heather’s office reads: “This is the Daye that the Lord has made,” above her impressive dry-erase To-Do List, organized by color and department.  She promises she’s a transplant from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, but whether that town actually exists is still to be determined.  Heather somehow successfully juggles both Accounting duties and teaming up with Darrel on Mini-Bible College tasks.  Let’s give credit where credit is due: Thank you color-coded whiteboard To-Do List.

Jan Sateren

Jan Sateren, Accounting Coordinator

Jan loves numbers.  Fifteen happens to be her favorite for no apparent reason, but we’re really glad that she pays careful attention to each of the digits.  As ICM’s bookkeeper, Jan keeps all of the commas and decimals straight so we don’t have to memorize Pi to the fiftieth place value.  Speaking of fiftieth, Jan’s self-admitted mid-life crisis recently led to the purchase of her PT Cruiser, emblazoned with silver flames down each side.  On weekends, you might find her in it zipping around the mountains, taking care of her rescued greyhound, or bragging about her two adorable grandsons.

Kristina Anderson

Kody Zenger, Photo and Video Production/Social Media Specialist

Kristina Anderson

Kristina Anderson, Director of Donor Relations

We’ve heard that big things come in small packages, but Kristina Anderson, seasoned bungee jumper, super-mom of four kids named with the letter “K”, and wife of a city Police Detective makes us believe it’s true.  Her love for thrill-seeking activities is enough to make us nervous but also makes her easy going and flexible; working with her on Ministry Advancement initiatives and proposals is a cinch.  This fantasy-fiction reader and avid cook also chips in to find ministry trends we’d never thought of.  It’s not surprising that she was the girl in college that loved Math and Chemistry.  As if E=MC² isn’t enough, we recently found out that Kristina’s first job was as a Shampoo Girl, so, we did what all good friends would do: immediately made a sign-up sheet to help her keep her skills fresh.

Lisa Cherry

Lisa Cherry, Director of Communications

Lisa Cherry, a former Illinoisan, has lived in Virginia since 1996. Though she misses her family back home, she does not miss temperatures below freezing! In 1997, she met her future husband, Adam, whom she married in 2001. Lisa credits God with directing her life, and loves it when He makes dramatic changes in it, like moving to Virginia from Illinois and leaving her newspaper job of 10 years for a position with ICM. Being a drummer’s wife keeps her busy at home, and she spends her down time reading, scrapbooking and entertaining her two fat cats, Nips and Cookie.

Maryna VanderJagt, General Clerk

Maryna was born in the Ukraine. When she was a toddler she pulled a pot of hot oil down on her face, and had to undergo several reconstructive surgeries. When she turned 16 Dois Rosser brought her to the U.S. for more surgeries. Maryna is very grateful for the blessings in her life since she arrived and says that her life “turned from hopelessness to hope”. In April of 2009, Maryna was married to a wonderful man, Andrew. She has been able to earn her GED, and will be attending college. Maryna enjoys being in nature, going on walks, writing, drawing, and scrapbooking in her spare time.

Michelle Knight, Donor Relations Specialist

Michelle’s love of world history and culture led her right to the doorstep of ICM. As a former World History student at Messiah College, she rounded the globe travelling to all corners of God’s creation. Being connected to ICM through her local church, she was excited to learn there was an incredible global-minded ministry so close to ‘home,’ or at least where the Navy has stationed her husband. Being the wife of Popeye the sailorman is taxing, but Michelle is very much enjoying married life with her husband and kitten, Twix. Any given day of the week you can find Michelle cooking, exploring the outdoors, and obsessing over things that come in miniature.

Mike Roth, National TV & Radio/Southwest Area Director

Mike comes to us from the YMCA in Houston, Texas where he served as the Associate Executive Director for the past 6 years. Mike will tell you that he wasn't born in Texas but got there as quickly as he could. Born in Queens, NY and living on Long Island until he was 10, Mike's family moved to Florida where Mike and his brothers were immersed in sports. Mike was 16 years old when he met and courted his future wife Monica. Mike graduated from Eastern Kentucky University where he earned a full athletic scholarship to play football as well as being named First team All Conference offensive guard for EKU during 4 of their Conference championship seasons. Mike and Monica were married in 1992 and they have two fabulous children, Kyle and Courtney. Mike came to Christ 10 years ago from the Jewish faith. He loves studying and discussing the Bible and sharing the amazing stories about how God has and continues to work in his life. The AD position with ICM seems to be a perfect fit as Mike shares the experiences of what God is doing around the world through ICM.

Robert Leatherwood, Southeast Area Director

It’s hard to hide Robert Leatherwood’s love for global ministry, even though it comes in a laid back Florida-style package.  A former youth pastor turned Director of Teen Outreach Project through World Ministries (a short-term missions agency for teens), Robert finally found his niche with ICM in 2002 as an Area Director based in Tampa.  He hasn’t left the sunshine state since, though we can’t blame him- the amazing weather is rivaled only by the amazing people.  Robert has the great job of meeting with people to not only introduce them to ICM but also to show them tangible ministry opportunities around the world.  It’s a pretty sweet gig.  On an even sweeter note, he and his wife, Sherrie, now have two Florida Seminoles, sons David and Taylor.

Ron Scott, Midwest Area Director

Ron comes to International Cooperating Ministries from the Institute for Character Development (ICD) at Drake University in Des Moines, IA where he served as the Institute’s Lead Trainer and Director of Education. Prior to serving at ICD, Scotty, as people throughout Iowa call him, taught and coached wrestling for 31 years at Mount Ayr community schools. Before joining the ICM staff, Scotty and his wife Dana partnered with their local church to build churches worldwide. When Scotty heard ICM’s Midwest Area Director was retiring, he felt God’s calling on his life to “finish strong” by joining the ICM team. It’s obvious that Scotty relies on the Lord for direction and provision, especially when he says, “I’m just an ol’ coach, dad, and grandpa and there are many times I can’t or do not want to do what I am called to do but then I realize that He can and He does want to.” Ron has been married to his wife Dana for 40 years and they have three adult sons and ten grandchildren.

slater

Slator Turner, Information Technology Consultant

When we think about Aerospace Engineering, Slator Turner isn’t exactly what we imagine. He’s got a much more vibrant personality than his schooling lets on. His know-how’s might include a spectrum of things we don’t know the definitions of, but we love him most for his skillful oversight of our systems and databases and the fact that he can’t say “no” if we’re extra nice (or bribe him with fudgy brownies).  It’s a great deal. If you have a few minutes, make sure you stick around for some of Slator’s tales – either about Turner Farms on the Eastern Shore, flying as an Army helicopter pilot, or life theories. You just might be enlightened by his quirky perspective. Among things he likes most, he says hanging out with his wife is first (sweet!). Always good for a laugh, it’s only appropriate that his grandkids call him “Buddy.” We, however, prefer to call him “Nutty Buddy.”

Gary Combs

Stephen Suratos, Web Designer and Graphics Coordinator

Stephen was born in the Philippines and immigrated to Virginia Beach when he was 14. Planting himself in a local church, he discovered his love of serving God through his many talents, including playing guitar in the worship team, assisting in the youth group as a youth leader, and maintaining the church's website. After obtaining an Associates degree in web design from ITT Technical Institute, he put his talents to work in various web designing positions before joining ICM. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball, tennis, practicing his photography skills and spending time with friends on the beach.

Victoria Hall

Victoria Turner-Hall, International Church Growth Support/Volunteer Coordinator

Victoria has green thumbs.  Blame it on her long-time love of the ancient Chinese hobby of Bonsai and her collection of miniature trees that has grown to over 10 strong.  Now that her outdoor greenhouse is complete, she has dedicated space to artfully train the branches of her Bonsais.  This Master Gardner doesn’t stop at mini-trees.  Her yard also boasts an organic garden and flowers, to boot.  Victoria has worked at ICM longer than most of us can remember and uses her multi-tasking abilities to manage our church-building project database, coordinate volunteers, and aid administratively.  On top of that, Victoria is our resident natural health advisor and makes sure we drink plenty of water.  If we have glowing skin and beautiful smiles, you’ll know why.
